How To Target Keywords To Drive Organic Traffic

Summary –

This will allow us to capture the plural keyword at the category level and the singular keyword at the product level. This is the best practices for targeting keywords as you desire.

Starting Point –

The client wants to rank for the singular as well as the plural of a keyword. How do we go about turning this into a reality? 4 main principles will not only make this possible but will help with SEO.

Here are the 4 main points:

1.     They already have a silo/category page for the plural of the keyword which has more keyword volume than the singular. (If you/they built out the silo correctly).

a.      For this document we will be using the example of “Irish Sweaters”.

2.     They sell multiple different types of the same product.

a.     Example Irish Sweaters

                                               i.     different styles

                                             ii.     different colors

                                            iii.     different materials.

3.     The current product titles need to be properly named.

4.     The product descriptions need to be expanded, descriptive, and include the singular keyword version.

We will go over these 4 principles in this document to give the client the best chance possible on making sure they rank for both the singular and plural.

Plural Version – Proper Silo Structure

1.     Start by going to the site that you wish to check.

2.     Check to make sure that at the category level you have the proper keyword as a parent page/Silo head. Example:

3.     As you can see underneath the clothing section we have the plural version of the keyword Irish Sweaters (which this site is currently ranking for).

The point to take out of this is you addressed the plural version of the keyword on the Category level. Addressing the keyword on the Category level must be followed through by addressing the singular version on the product level as described below.

Singular Keyword -Is the site selling multiple products under the same category?

To address the keyword on the product level its important they are displayed right on the category page AND the product page. We are going to use “Irish sweaters” again for this example.

Example URL: https://www.creativeirishgifts.com/search?k=irish%20sweaters  to duplicate this example follow the steps below.

First thing to note is that on this page is that none of the product titles have the word “Irish sweaters”.

1.     Use the search function to search for the keyword.

2.     Press Enter to find what results are currently populating.

3.     Our “Irish Sweaters” search multiple products that fall under the proper category, but are misnamed.

Product Titles –

1.     If you look to the image above we notice that when searching for “irish sweaters” none of the displayed products have titles containing the keyword “irish sweater”

a.     see circled above for example, see arrows for specific wording that needs to be changed.

2.     Product titles are a great way to implement singular keywords and start ranking for the singular “Irish sweater”. Examples below will show the correct way to change these to promote google to start ranking the site higher for “Irish sweater”

a.     Children’s Aran Sweaters From Ireland – Cardigan

                                               i.     Fixed: Children’s Aran Irish Sweater – Cardigan

b.     Children’s Aran Sweaters From Ireland – Crew

                                               i.     Fixed: Children’s Aran Irish Sweater – Crew

c.     Men’s Fairisle Celtic Troy Sweater – Brown

                                               i.     Fixed: Men’s Fairisle Celtic Troy Irish Sweater – Brown

3.     What needs to happen is you need to include the singular “irish sweater” in the product titles for the products that it applies to.

a.     The poncho’s on the page don’t fall directly under the irish sweater category, and if you want to rank for Irish Poncho/ Fair Isle Poncho we won’t be able to include these in the Irish Sweater Product Title Change.

b.     It’s important to only change products to the category when they fall underneath the umbrella of that specific category.

                                               i.     Example: Poncho’s do not fall under the Irish Sweaters category and vice versa, but they both fall under a larger category of Fall Clothing.

Product & Meta Descriptions –

Product descriptions need to be unique (not found anywhere else on the internet*), descriptive as possible, informative for the user, and hold the keyword you want to rank for.

*If someone decides to use your descriptions Google has the ability to trace the original content back to the original website.

This is a product description that on the product page. While having a fairly descriptive copy, this copy is not unique as it appears on other descriptions with a slight alteration over and over again. Does hit all the boxes? Lets take a look below.

1.     Unique description – Not a unique description “a timeless…” and “thought to bring luck….” Have been used before on other product pages.

2.     Descriptive – This product description is fairly well done, the history is talked about, the features are mentioned, and so has the style.

3.     Is it informative – Has the user received all the information possible so they have no further questions?

a.     Mentioning the Deep Blue, Warm Red, and other colors it comes in might be a great way expand upon the product.

4.     Keyword – does the description hold the keyword that you are trying to rank for?

a.     In this example we do not see “Irish sweater” naturally implemented into the description. We can fix this by adding it, ideally, at the beginning or close to the beginning of the description.

Meta Data – For Singular Keyword on Product Level Pages

This is standard SEO practice, when targeting a keyword it needs to go in the following.
